چکیده

Network analysis has driven key developments in animal behavior research by providing quantitative methods to study the social structure of animal groups and populations. A recent advancement in network science, multilayer network analysis, the study of network structures of multiple interconnected ‘layers’, offers a novel way to represent and analyze the structure of animal behavior, and help strengthen links to broader ecological and evolutionary contexts. We outline the potential uses of these new methods at individual-, group-, population-, and evolutionary-levels, and we highlight their potential to advance behavioral ecology research. This novel quantitative approach makes it possible to address classic research questions from a new perspective and opens a diversity of new questions that previously have been out of reach.

Multilayer Brain Networks

The field of neuroscience is facing an unprecedented expanse in the volume and diversity of available data. Traditionally, network models have provided key insights into the structure and function of the brain. With the advent of big data in neuroscience, both more sophisticated models capable of characterizing the increasing complexity of the data and novel methods of quantitative analysis are...

Prediction of breeding values for the milk production trait in Iranian Holstein cows applying artificial neural networks

The artificial neural networks, the learning algorithms and mathematical models mimicking the information processing ability of human brain can be used non-linear and complex data. The aim of this study was to predict the breeding values for milk production trait in Iranian Holstein cows applying artificial neural networks. Data on 35167 Iranian Holstein cows recorded between 1998 to 2009 were ...

On the evolution of dispersal and altruism in aphids.

How competitive interactions and population structure promote or inhibit cooperation in animal groups remains a key challenge in social evolution. In eusocial aphids, there is no single explanation for what predisposes some lineages of aphids to sociality, and not others. Because the assumption has been that most aphid species occur in essentially clonal groups, the roles of intra- and interspe...

A Novel Fuzzy and Artificial Neural Network Representation of Overcurrent Relay Characteristics

Accurate models of Overcurrent (OC) with inverse time relay characteristics play an important role for coordination of power system protection schemes. This paper proposes a new method for modeling OC relays curves. The model is based on fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks. The feed forward multilayer perceptron neural network is used to calculate operating times of OC relays for various...
